Inpatient Services
We offer inpatient services in a dedicated unit specially equipped to enhance recovery from stroke and other neurological and orthopedic conditions. Our patients receive 24-hour nursing care with physician coverage while accessing the different modalities of therapy.
Our treatment packages are consistent with best care guidelines, understanding the need for early intensive rehabilitation to provide the best chances for recovery. We host regular interdisciplinary meetings with family members to define goals and make preparations for the continuation of care in the home environment.
Setting Goals for Rehabilitation
Goal setting is of paramount importance in rehabilitation as with other disciplines. A meaningful goal can maximize the patient’s engagement and motivate the patient to achieve their goals
Revamp Stroke Rehabilitation Programme:
Stroke rehabilitation is a multidimensional process designed to facilitate restoration of or adaptation to the loss of function sustained after a stroke. Stroke is a major health problem worldwide, and is expected to become more prevalent in the future as a consequence of the ageing population. Effective Rehabilitation Therapies are essential to allow stroke survivors to make the best possible recovery. Most people survive a first stroke but often have significant morbidity. Rehabilitation aims to enhance functional activities and participation in society and thus improve quality of life. Medical studies have clearly demonstrated that early, vigorous, interdisciplinary treatment, as well as close medical follow up to prevent future strokes are the keys to achieving optimal recovery.
Though we place special emphasis on stroke recovery, we are equally focused on other forms of rehabilitation, and have special programmes geared towards optimal outcome for each case we manage. Key aspects of rehabilitative care include:
- Identification and assessment of functional difficulties.
- Treatment planning (goal setting, delivery of interventions)
- Evaluation of effectiveness.
Intensity of Stroke Rehabilitation
At least 45 minutes of each relevant stroke rehabilitation therapy is offered for a minimum of 5 days per week for those who have the ability to participate and where functional goals can be achieved, however, this may be tailored to the patient’s needs as well as other factors.
Cognitive Functioning;
Patients are screened for cognitive deficits. Where deficits are recognized, detailed assessments are carried out before designing a treatment programme.
Emotional functioning:
Emotional functioning is assessed in the context of cognitive difficulties in people after stroke and addressed accordingly.
Swallowing:
Swallowing therapy is offered at least 3 times per week to people with difficulty swallowing after a stroke for as long as they continue to make functional gains
Access to other services as required:
These include:
- Continence advice
- Dietetics
- Liaison psychiatry
